Nick Hoffman: "This recording was made in real-time. There is no editing or digital manipulation. The microcassette recorder that I performed this solo with has many problems. I don’t know exactly what happened to it, but it doesn’t function the way that it was designed to. Occasionally the tape completely stops for no obvious reason. I suppose it’s just an old machine. The volume knob affects amplitude, pitch, and timbre. It also functions as a kind of contact mic. I tap on the plastic casing and it resonates. Every time I use this microcassette machine new sounds emerge. It is impossible to predict or control. I have made two drawings to correspond with the sounds - one for each track."
